British Airways Waterside
British Airways planned to concentrate their disparate offices, which had grown around Heathrow as the airport grew, in a new business centre. Part of this concept was to incorporate their range of activities over and above office functions: the development was designed to incorporate a staff medical centre, cabin crew training facilities, a library, restaurants and a gym. The scheme accommodates 2,000 staff and involved the reclamation of a former landfill site and the creation of a new 150 acre public park.
We developed the concept design from the competition-winning entry by Norwegian architect Niels Torp. The basis of this design was to create a series of smaller scale buildings set within the park and linked by a glazed street. This street, through its layout and interconnecting walkways and bridges, allows informal interactions and meetings, enabling previously isolated business groups to act more cohesively.
