A competition-winning scheme for German publisher Axel Springer AG's new administration headquarters. The project involved two elements: the famous Axel Springer Tower a listed building that has been retained and a new low rise mixed use building containing bars, restaurants and shops with offices above.
The two buildings are linked by a large enclosed space, the Ullstein-Halle. This dramatic hall normally functions as a circulation space for staff but it can easily be transformed to host major events. Two screens of louvres and a specially designed system of roller blinds can provide up to 100% blackout.
